POKOTABI / Kakuyaki
かくやき
At Kakuyaki in Arakawa Ward's Machiya, thick beef tongue and tender skirt steak grilled over the grate meet comforting bowls of spicy tegutan soup and cold noodles.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Sizzling over the metal grate, thick cuts of salted tongue take on a deep sear while retaining their tender, succulent bite. Located in the Machiya 4-chome district of Arakawa Ward, Kakuyaki is a relaxed neighborhood yakiniku restaurant beloved by locals for generous cuts served without fuss.
The restaurant's signature appeal lies in the traditional downtown Tokyo approach to marinated meats. Tender harami (skirt steak) and premium jō-harami come coated in a house tare sauce with a delicate, rounded sweetness that begs for steaming bowls of white rice or a cold drink. Alongside staples like kalbi short ribs and loin, the kitchen serves beef offal including fresh horumon, giara (abomasum), and thick-cut jō-mino (first stomach), each cut thick and substantial.
The supporting sides hold their own alongside the grilled beef. A spicy tegutan soup simmered with generous helpings of vegetables provides a lively, peppery counterpoint between rich bites of meat, while crisp sanchu lettuce wraps and platters of kimchi keep the meal feeling fresh. For the finish, diners can choose refreshing chilled naengmyeon noodles, or turn to hot noodle bowls like gomtang noodles and hearty kalbi udon.
Following a renovation, the dining area is bright and comfortably arranged, easily welcoming family meals with children or casual dinners with friends. Given that the evening dining hours can fill completely on certain nights, reserving ahead is well worth considering.
